BJJ Glossary: Demystifying the Lingo
Basic Terminology
- Gi: The traditional uniform worn in BJJ (think of a sturdy karate uniform).
- No-Gi: Training without the gi, usually in rash guards and shorts.
- Rolling: Sparring in BJJ.
- Tap Out: To submit by tapping your opponent, the mat, or yourself repeatedly to signal you give up.
- Academy: Another term for a BJJ gym or school.
Positions
- Guard: The position where you’re on your back, using your legs to control your opponent.
- Closed Guard: Your legs are closed around your opponent’s waist.
- Open Guard: Variations where your legs are open (butterfly guard, spider guard, etc.).
- Mount: Dominant position where you’re on top of your opponent’s torso.
- Side Control: Controlling your opponent from the side, pinning them down.
- Back Control: Controlling your opponent from behind, a highly advantageous position.
Submissions
- Choke: Technique that cuts off blood flow to the brain, causing unconsciousness.
- Armbar: Hyperextension of the elbow joint.
- Kimura: A shoulder lock.
- Triangle Choke: Choke using your legs and your opponent’s arm.
Other Common Terms
- Sweep: Reversing a bottom position to end up on top.
- Pass the Guard: Escaping your opponent’s guard and moving to a better position.
- Drilling: Practicing specific techniques repeatedly to build muscle memory.
- Oss: A respectful greeting and acknowledgment in BJJ (similar to how “Namaste” is used in yoga).
Important Notes
- Respect the tap: Always release a submission immediately when your opponent taps.
- Belt system: BJJ has a progression of belts: white, blue, purple, brown, black (with advanced degrees within them).
